Cave Hill's History major is pitched as much for the transferable skills it builds as for its subject content: students learn to analyse events and issues, express ideas clearly in writing and speech, gather and weigh evidence, and organise material coherently, skills the department argues matter to employers across disciplines, not just historians. Coursework spans topics including global environmental history, the history of medicine, and how slavery and the slave trade shaped the Caribbean and the United States, alongside Latin American history.
The major requires twelve three-credit History courses, 36 credits in total, with a further 54 credits of faculty requirements and electives making up the full 90-credit degree, split evenly across the three levels. Entry into the required English-language foundation course needs a Grade 1 pass in English Language at CXC, or an equivalent qualification, or alternatively a passing score on the English Proficiency Test; students lacking either option first take a remedial writing course. The degree takes a minimum of three years.
