Program details

Overview

This four-year honours degree focuses on optimizing how buildings perform by bridging building design, construction methods, human comfort, and sustainability into a single field of study. Algonquin College describes it as the only program of its kind in Canada, aimed at producing professionals who understand building physics and can treat a building as an integrated system rather than a set of separate components. The program is delivered through the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence, which functions as an applied research and industry hub supporting hands-on training and collaboration with the construction sector. Compared with more theory-based degrees, the program emphasizes practical application, splitting a significant portion of coursework between hands-on projects and computer modelling exercises. Students can complete the degree with a co-operative education component, gaining paid work experience related to their studies. The program suits students interested in the technical side of building performance and construction, such as energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability, rather than architectural design alone.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 65.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Applicants need six Grade 12 university (U) or university/college (M) courses with a minimum 65% average, including one Grade 12 U English course at 70% or higher, one Grade 12 U Mathematics course at 70% or higher, and one Grade 12 U Science course (Physics preferred) at 70% or higher; an OSSD or equivalent is required, with the standard mature-student route otherwise. International transcripts must document the same three subject grades and, where required, prove English proficiency: Academic IELTS overall 6.5 with no band under 6.0, or TOEFL iBT overall 88 with 22 in every component (pre-21-January-2026 tests) or the 4.5-scale equivalent with 4.5 per component (tests after that date), or a Duolingo score of 120 overall with 120 in Literacy and nothing below 105. Domestic applicants with international transcripts must have them assessed by ICAS or WES.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for September 2027 entry the application portal opens 26 September 2026, the equal consideration date is 1 February 2027, and offers must be accepted by 1 May 2027, while later applications are still assessed as space allows; Algonquin publishes no separate equal-consideration date for the January 2027 intake. International applicants apply directly via Algonquin's own International Application Portal, not ontariocolleges.ca; instead of one fixed date the college posts a program-by-program closing-date list shortly before each term starts - for Fall 2026 most programs closed 16 September 2026, technology programs by 9-10 September; no Winter 2027 or Fall 2027 international list has been posted yet, so admission remains effectively rolling until each list is published and fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
