Program details

Overview

Political Science at Dalhousie University is a Bachelor of Arts program offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the Halifax campus, with admission in September and January. The curriculum examines power structures at local, national, and global levels, covering topics such as Canadian government, international relations, political theory, Indigenous politics, environmental policy, and the political dimensions of social media. Coursework builds from foundational first-year courses toward specialized upper-level offerings, with an emphasis on developing research, critical thinking, and writing skills. Students can pursue the degree as a Major, Double Major, Honours program, Minor in Political Science or Security Studies, or as part of a combined degree with another field. The program suits students interested in understanding the values, laws, institutions, and policy mechanisms that govern public life, and it provides a foundation for careers in law, public service, journalism, non-governmental organizations, diplomacy, and electoral administration.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from a completed Grade 12 requires a minimum overall average of 70 percent, including Academic English 12 and four further academic Grade 12 subjects. Admission to Dalhousie programmes is competitive, so meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a place. The programme's own page names no portfolio, interview or other non-academic condition, directing applicants instead to the separate admission pages for Canadian, international and transfer applicants for category-specific equivalencies. International applicants are assessed on the same subject list through Dalhousie's equivalency tables and must also meet the university's English-language requirement unless exempt, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 20. The programme admits students in both September and January.

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Dalhousie's live Dates and Deadlines page still shows the September 2026 entry cycle as of mid-September 2026, not the 2027 cycle. For that cycle, Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) and Bachelor of Social Work close February 15, 2026; the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (Architecture) closes March 1, 2026; and the Health Sciences post-diploma option closes June 15, 2026. All other undergraduate programmes are considered on a rolling, space-available basis for both domestic and international applicants, with no separate international closing date published; May 15, 2026 is only the deposit and English-proficiency deadline, not an application deadline. Dalhousie has not yet published September 2027 entry dates. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
