Dalhousie University's Master of Journalism, delivered jointly with the University of King's College in Halifax, prepares students to research, report, and produce in-depth journalism across print, broadcast, and digital formats. Coursework builds skills in document research, data journalism, photography, and contemporary reporting practice, and the program centres on a major professional project: an extensively researched piece of journalism completed under faculty guidance, with an industry-mentored project option also available. Two entry routes are offered: a full-time, course-based track for students with a four-year undergraduate degree entering in September, and a January-entry track, available part-time, for applicants with recent journalism education or professional experience. Full-time completion runs approximately 16 to 20 months depending on entry point. New students can begin the program in either September or January. Graduates pursue careers across news, digital media, and long-form journalism.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: For September entry, applicants need a four-year undergraduate degree or its equivalent. For January entry, applicants must hold a journalism degree completed within the past 10 years, or have at least five years of full-time journalism employment within the last seven years. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet University of King's College and Dalhousie's graduate English-language proficiency standards, such as an IELTS Academic score of 7.0 or a TOEFL iBT score of 4.5 on the 1-6 scale.
