Overview
Emily Carr University's Master of Design (Interaction) is a two-year, on-campus graduate degree combining creative research, material exploration, coursework and a thesis project. Rooted in UX/UI, the curriculum extends into interaction design topics including services and systems, human-technology relations, data ethics and computation. Students take studio-based courses and research seminars, take part in collaborative and independent design projects, and develop a thesis that combines practical design work with scholarly analysis. The program gives access to on-campus research centres and labs, including a dedicated VR lab, and includes presentations and lectures from designers and scholars. Applicants admitted to the Master of Design program are placed in either the Interaction or the Interdisciplinary cohort based on their practice and research goals. The degree leads to a Master of Design credential delivered entirely on campus in Vancouver.

Admission Requirements: Emily Carr University's general graduate admission requirements apply to the Master of Design (Interaction) programme, since the programme does not publish separate criteria. Applicants must hold a recognized Bachelor's degree, normally in Design, Fine Arts, Media Arts, Architecture, Visual Arts or a related field; applicants from outside art and design may apply but must demonstrate studio proficiency, and a three-year Bachelor's degree is accepted if it is equivalent to a four-year Canadian degree. A minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 (B) is required, and applicants in the final year of their Bachelor's degree may apply. Applicants submit a portfolio of five studio/design projects (multi-page documentation files in 2D, 3D or time-based media, time-based work under three minutes), written responses of up to 250 words each to four set prompts, a two-minute video response, a curriculum vitae and three recommendation forms, all through the university's online application portal. Successful applicants to the Master of Design program may be placed in either the Interaction or Interdisciplinary cohort based on their practice and research goals. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an English proficiency test score unless exempted by a prior degree taught in English; accepted tests include IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, CAE, CPE, CAEL, MELAB and PTE Academic. Admission is competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer.
