Overview
The Master of Design (Art and Design) is a thesis-based graduate program offered by the Department of Art and Design in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta, delivered on campus. It provides advanced studio-based study leading to a Master's degree, within a department that also offers the Master of Fine Arts, the Master of Arts, and the Doctor of Philosophy in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture. Graduate students in studio disciplines are provided with independent working spaces and access to the equipment needed for their studies, supported by a university library and a departmental visual resources centre with over 300,000 slides, and supervision from eighteen full-time academic staff. Admission normally requires a bachelor's degree in design, or its equivalent, from a recognized institution; students needing to complete prerequisite coursework will typically spend an additional year in preparation. Applicants must submit visual records or a portfolio of their work along with documentation of previous experience as part of admission.
