Overview
Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Diploma in Music is a two-year, four-semester undergraduate credential in the Faculty of Arts, requiring 60 credits. All prospective music students apply to the Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts Degree; those who wish to graduate with the Diploma may apply after completing one of six available concentrations. Each concentration combines four semesters of private instruction on the student's chosen instrument, participation in a large ensemble each semester, and academic and applied coursework, supplemented by electives chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor. Instruction takes place at the Langley campus, whose facilities support solo, orchestral, band, choral, and chamber music instruction. Admission is by audition and a KPU Music Placement Test assessing music theory, history, and aural musicianship; the expected performance standard is equivalent to Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Grade 6 for most instruments and RCM Grade 10 for piano. Credit for courses completed at other institutions may be transferred subject to approval by the Music Chair. Graduates receive a Diploma in Music.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: In addition to the Faculty's Admission Requirements (KPU's undergraduate English Proficiency Requirement), applicants must complete a scheduled audition on their instrument, demonstrating musical and technical skill equivalent to Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Grade 6 for all instruments except piano, or RCM Grade 10 for piano. Applicants must also achieve a satisfactory score on the KPU Music Placement Test, which assesses music theory, music history, and aural musicianship, though applicants who have completed the RCM Advanced Rudiments Examination in Theory (or Conservatory Canada Theory IV) or the RCM History 1 Examination may be exempt from the corresponding placement-test section on presentation of certification.
