Program details

Overview

The Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) is Metro Vancouver's only four-year journalism degree, delivered through Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Faculty of Arts. The 54-credit major uses industry-standard software and covers multimedia storytelling across photography, audio, video, and data visualization, alongside courses in citizen journalism, feature writing, media ethics and law, and data visualization, combined with Communication Studies electives examining media and diversity and media and social change. Instruction combines seminars, labs, and real-world practical training. The Honours stream adds 9 credits beyond the standard 120-credit Bachelor of Journalism, comprising a research course, an Honours Thesis, and an Honours Seminar, though Honours courses are not offered every year. Graduates are prepared for roles such as multimedia journalists, editors, web writers, and freelance journalists, as well as communications positions in media relations, corporate communications, and public relations.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Faculty of Arts's admission requirements apply, consisting of KPU's Undergraduate English Proficiency Requirement. Students declare the Major in Journalism by the time they complete 60 credits of undergraduate coursework, having completed at least 18 credits with a minimum grade of C, including 3 credits of ENGL at the 1100 level or higher and 6 credits at the 1100 level or higher in the major area, while remaining in good academic standing. Bachelor of Journalism Honours students complete an additional 9 credits beyond the standard 120-credit degree; application deadlines and selection criteria for the Honours stream are set by the Journalism department. KPU's calendar page sets out these requirements without separating domestic from international applicants, so the same standard applies to both.
