Program details

Overview

Biochemistry at Mount Allison University links chemistry and biology to study the chemical processes that underlie living systems, with the program accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Science major or honours degree, or a minor combinable with any other program, building a shared science foundation in the first two years before specializing in the third and fourth. Coursework moves from introductory biochemistry, organic and analytical chemistry, cell biology, and enzymology toward upper-year topics such as nucleic acids, protein structure, signal transduction, virology, and animal physiology, with electives available in related fields like biology, physics, and mathematics. Delivery is on-campus at the Sackville, New Brunswick campus, with an emphasis on laboratory experience gained through coursework and faculty-supervised research, including opportunities to work as a summer research assistant in active labs studying topics like animal physiology, receptor biology, and marine algae biochemistry. The program is suited to students aiming for medical, dental, pharmacy, or veterinary school, as well as those interested in research careers in genetics, pharmacology, or environmental science, or roles such as forensic scientist or public health professional.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Biochemistry's programme page sets no academic prerequisites of its own for a Bachelor of Science and defers to Mount Allison's general admission requirements. There, decisions weigh the whole applicant — academic record, leadership, level of commitment, and potential for personal growth — with the specific courses and grades required varying by the applicant's province or country and prior education. Applicants whose language of instruction was not English must meet Mount Allison's English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 in each of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing (PTE Academic 60 with no score below 51, CAEL CE 70 with no part below 60, Cambridge English B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 with no band below 169, and Duolingo English Test 110 are also accepted). Three years of Canadian secondary schooling, or 30+ credit hours at an English-medium post-secondary institution, can also satisfy it; applicants short only on language may receive conditional admission through the university's English Summer Pathway Program.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Mount Allison uses rolling admission with no fixed general deadline: for the 2027-28 (Fall 2027) intake, early admission based on final Grade 11 marks opens 1 October 2026, general admission with mid-year Grade 12 transcripts opens in February 2027, and 1 March 2027 is the deadline to submit all application documents for admission and scholarship consideration. The deadline to accept an offer and pay the registration deposit is 1 May 2027. Bachelor of Music applicants must submit their application package by 1 February 2027, and Fine Arts (BFA/BA) applicants must submit their portfolio by 15 February 2027. International applicants follow the same published dates; Mount Allison does not publish a separate international deadline, so admission remains rolling until programs are full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
