Program details

Overview

Art History at Mount Allison University surveys visual and material culture from introductory courses through specialized seminars on topics including Canadian and Indigenous art, museum and curatorial studies, contemporary art, and 19th- and 20th-century art. The credential is a Bachelor of Arts major, with a minor also available for students in any degree; majors are encouraged to complete an independent study essay on a topic of their choice. Delivery is on-campus at the Sackville, New Brunswick campus, and students have direct access to the Owens Art Gallery, one of Canada's oldest university art galleries, which holds several thousand works, along with an art conservation lab used for preservation and treatment training. The program is housed within the Pierre Lassonde School of Fine Arts, which offers entrance scholarships and paid internship opportunities. Classes are small, and faculty include practicing artists and art historians who work closely with students. The program suits those interested in visual culture and critical analysis, preparing graduates for roles such as museum curator, art historian, conservator, arts administrator, or exhibition designer, as well as further graduate or professional study in creative fields.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Art History's programme page sets no academic prerequisites of its own for a Bachelor of Arts and defers to Mount Allison's general admission requirements. There, decisions weigh the whole applicant — academic record, leadership, level of commitment, and potential for personal growth — with the specific courses and grades required varying by the applicant's province or country and prior education. Applicants whose language of instruction was not English must meet Mount Allison's English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 in each of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing (PTE Academic 60 with no score below 51, CAEL CE 70 with no part below 60, Cambridge English B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 with no band below 169, and Duolingo English Test 110 are also accepted). Three years of Canadian secondary schooling, or 30+ credit hours at an English-medium post-secondary institution, can also satisfy it; applicants short only on language may receive conditional admission through the university's English Summer Pathway Program.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Mount Allison uses rolling admission with no fixed general deadline: for the 2027-28 (Fall 2027) intake, early admission based on final Grade 11 marks opens 1 October 2026, general admission with mid-year Grade 12 transcripts opens in February 2027, and 1 March 2027 is the deadline to submit all application documents for admission and scholarship consideration. The deadline to accept an offer and pay the registration deposit is 1 May 2027. Bachelor of Music applicants must submit their application package by 1 February 2027, and Fine Arts (BFA/BA) applicants must submit their portfolio by 15 February 2027. International applicants follow the same published dates; Mount Allison does not publish a separate international deadline, so admission remains rolling until programs are full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
