Overview
The Heavy Mechanical Trades Apprenticeship provides Levels 1-4 apprenticeship technical training for the heavy mechanical trades, preparing apprentices to work in the Heavy Duty Equipment, Truck and Transport, Diesel Engine, or Transport Trailer repair industries. Training covers diagnostic and repair work on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, with common early levels branching into trade-specific Level 4 streams (Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic); level lengths run from 300 hours at Level 1 down to 150 hours at Level 4. Levels are delivered in person at the Fort St. John campus with multiple cohort start points through the year, and training results are reported to SkilledTradesBC.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to this SkilledTradesBC-registered apprenticeship requires applicants to be an active registered apprentice in British Columbia and to follow the training sequence set out in the programme's credentialing chart posted by SkilledTradesBC, rather than meeting a college-set academic prerequisite. No English, French, or other language proficiency score is published for entry. Once enrolled, apprentices must maintain a minimum of 70% in all courses to progress between levels. Applicants must supply personal protective equipment and a computer meeting minimum specifications; the programme is not eligible for Canada Student Loans. Delivered at Fort St. John on a cohort basis: Level 1 begins in September and April, Level 2 in September and January, Level 3 in February and April, Level 4 (Heavy Duty) in November, and Level 4 (Truck and Transport) in May.

Application Deadline:Northern Lights College uses one admissions calendar for domestic and international applicants alike, applying through EducationPlannerBC or in person. Applications open about eleven months before each intake: 1 October for the following Fall, 1 February for the following Winter, and 1 June for the following Spring. For the 2027 cycle the priority deadline is 30 September 2026 for Winter 2027 entry, 31 January 2027 for Spring 2027 entry, and 31 May 2027 for Fall 2027 entry (dual-credit applicants get until 24 October 2026 and 23 June 2027 respectively), with a tuition deposit due about a month after each priority date. NLC states international applicants already in Canada on a valid visa follow the same domestic deadlines; after the priority date, seats remain open, on a rolling basis, until each term's add/drop date. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
