Overview
This program delivers the technical training component of the Carpentry apprenticeship at Thompson Rivers University. It is organized into four levels, each consisting of seven weeks of on-campus instruction, for a combined 28 weeks of in-school training across the apprenticeship. Levels build progressively on carpentry theory, blueprint reading, and hands-on construction skills, delivered mainly at the Kamloops campus, with some sessions also offered in Williams Lake. Apprentices must be sponsored by an employer registered with SkilledTradesBC and alternate each technical training block with on-the-job work experience. Entry into the apprenticeship follows completion of high school (or mature student status) with English 11 and Math 11 at 60% or higher, together with good physical health, though most apprentices enter this stream through active employment rather than direct application. On completing all four levels of technical training and the required work-based hours, apprentices earn a certification of qualification in carpentry and become eligible to write the interprovincial Red Seal exam. Admission Requirements: This is TRU's apprenticeship stream rather than the Foundation certificate, so the program page sets no high-school course prerequisites for it. The page states apprentices must be sponsored by an employer registered with SkilledTradesBC and must be in good physical health. Thompson Rivers University's general undergraduate admission basis also applies at the institutional level: graduation from a recognised high-school curriculum, 12 or more transferable post-secondary credits, or mature-student status; international applicants must additionally have completed secondary school and be at least 17 years old.International applicants must also meet Thompson Rivers University's own language bar for direct entry into an undergraduate certificate or diploma program: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 88 with no section below 20, per TRU's English requirements page.
