Overview
The Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship is an on-campus trades program delivered at the Skilled Trades Training Centre in Grande Prairie, Alberta, combining employer-based on-the-job training with periods of technical classroom instruction at the institution. Technical training is organized into four periods, with the first two periods running nine weeks each and the third and fourth periods running eight weeks each. Coursework covers adjusting, testing, and repairing engines, steering and braking systems, drivetrains, vehicle suspensions, electrical systems, and air-conditioning systems, as well as performing wheel alignments. Depending on the size of the shop they work in, technicians may specialize in specific vehicle components or handle a broad range of repair work. Students register as apprentices through Alberta's Tradesecrets system, which governs eligibility, progression, and scheduling of technical training periods. The program includes a work-integrated learning component through the apprenticeship structure itself.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training eligibility requirements and demonstrate one of the following: passing standing in English 20-2, Math 20-3, and Science 10; passing marks on all five Canadian General Educational Development (GED) or Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) tests; or a passing score on the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training entrance exam.
