Overview
This part-time certificate runs for one year and totals 272 hours of self-paced, asynchronous, tutor-supported online study, without direct instruction, across eight required courses. The curriculum covers the foundations and management of health and safety systems, relevant legislation, disability and ability management, human factors, training and facilitation skills, risk management, and investigation and auditing practices. At least half of the program must be completed through Okanagan College, and each course requires a minimum grade of 70 percent. Admission requires B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent (or being at least 19 and out of secondary school for a year), along with English 12 at a minimum of 60 percent or an accepted alternative. Graduates become eligible to apply for Canadian Registered Safety Technician certification and are prepared for roles such as health and safety advisor, officer, supervisor, coordinator, trainer, or manager across sectors including construction, forestry, mining, manufacturing, education, health care, government, agriculture, and oil and gas.
