The Licentiate in Mediaeval Studies (LMS) is a post-doctoral academic programme at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (PIMS) for scholars who have already completed a doctoral degree, normally within the previous five years. The programme has two components: a mandatory Interdisciplinary Seminar and an independent thesis developed using PIMS's library and manuscript resources, aimed at giving candidates optimum opportunity to develop their proposed research topic. Admission requires a research proposal describing the scholarship the candidate intends to undertake at the Institute, letters of support from two scholars familiar with the candidate's work, a curriculum vitae, and an official transcript; candidates must also come prepared with the languages needed to work directly with primary sources in their field. Applications are reviewed annually, with a deadline of 15 February and decisions issued by 30 April. Once admitted, candidates have up to six years to complete and submit the thesis. On successful completion, PIMS awards the Licentiate in Mediaeval Studies, a research credential in the field of mediaeval studies.
