The Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Mediations at Carleton University is an interdisciplinary program housed within the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture (ICSLAC). It gives students the freedom to define their own objects of study and to build eclectic, interdisciplinary supervisory committees that cross conventional disciplinary boundaries. Research strengths within the program include comparative literature, curatorial studies, diaspora studies, digital humanities, film and media studies, gender and queer studies, Indigenous art, memory studies, music and sound studies, and transnational studies. The program combines coursework with independent doctoral research culminating in a dissertation, informed by theoretical rigour across the humanities and cultural studies. The nominal full-time length of the program is five years, with an annual intake in the Fall term. Graduates are prepared for academic careers as well as research and cultural-sector roles.
