This program leads to a Bachelor of Education through an after-degree pathway intended for students who already hold a prior degree, completed over two years on campus in Calgary, Alberta, using a cohort model in which the same group of students moves through the program together. It blends theory, practice, and reflection across foundational education coursework, with secondary-route students also taking two subject-specialization courses, and addresses students' mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual development. Across four semesters, students complete a total of 26 full-time weeks of practicum, typically across three different school placements, supported by classroom-teacher mentors and university practicum advisors; an optional third practicum can take place in another province or internationally. Admission Requirements: The Bachelor of Education (Elementary and Secondary Streams) After-Degree is open only to holders of a completed undergraduate degree, with all first-degree requirements finished by the Winter semester preceding the Fall intake. St. Mary's University requires a minimum 2.5 grade point average, calculated on the applicant's most recently attempted 30 undergraduate credits; admission is competitive and applications are assessed on a rolling basis as documents arrive. Each stream carries further course prerequisites that must be completed with marks posted by July 31. Applicants must submit a resume evidencing experience in educational settings and work with children, plus two reference forms from professional or academic referees (family and friends are not accepted). English language proficiency, required of all applicants regardless of citizenship, is met by IELTS Academic at 8.0 overall with no band below 7.0, TOEFL iBT at 5.5 overall with no component below 5 (98 overall, no component below 23, under the pre-January-2026 TOEFL scale), or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency at 200.
