Overview
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Astronomy focuses on the principles of physics and mathematics are used to investigate the fundamental nature of the universe and its evolution; the properties of galaxies; and the birth, evolution, and death of stars and black holes. You'll learn to apply this knowledge to solve problems in navigation, space flight, and satellite communications, as well as to develop the instrumentation and techniques used to observe and collect astronomical data. Upon graduation, you'll be qualified to pursue further studies in the sciences, medicine, law, or education, or may choose to work as technical support personnel in observatories and astronomy educators, or as outreach experts at science centres and planetariums.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: IB applicants need a completed IB Diploma with three Higher Level subjects, IB Math Analysis and Approaches SL or HL (or IB Math Applications and Interpretation HL), one of IB Biology, IB Chemistry or IB Physics, and Grade 11 (or equivalent) Chemistry and Physics; the Physics requirement is waived for candidates with grades of 5 in both IB Chemistry and IB Mathematics. Domestic Canadian secondary-school applicants follow the Faculty of Science's equivalent path: English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 plus Pre-Calculus 12, judged on UBC's overall Grade 11/12 profile with no published entry average, so each program competes against its own applicant pool that year. International applicants may instead present GCE A/AS Levels, the Baccalaureat, the Singapore-Cambridge GCE, or another approved twelve-year credential covering equivalent prerequisites. All applicants must meet UBC's English Language Admission Standard, whose routes include IELTS Academic overall 6.5.

Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
