Overview
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics is a deep understanding of the economy and examine the social, cross-cultural, and ethical dimensions of economic decision-making. You’ll learn how to choose and apply appropriate quantitative methods to a range of economic issues, and effectively communicate complex economic issues. You'll have the opportunity to participate in Co-op and international exchange learning opportunities. Your career opportunities will vary widely across a range of fields including finance, insurance, business, public policy and administration, statistics, mathematics, law, education, and others.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UBC's own admission page for Economics states no specific courses are required beyond the general requirements for entry to UBC Vancouver's Bachelor of Arts programs. For BC secondary-school applicants, UBC's institution-wide standard requires graduation from a recognised secondary school with English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 among the required Grade 12 courses; UBC publishes no institution-wide minimum entry average, since each program is assessed against its own applicant pool. International applicants are admitted on a recognised university-preparation credential: a completed IB Diploma with at least three Higher Level courses, GCE A Levels/AS Levels covering six academic areas including English, the Baccalaureat General or Baccalaureat Francais International, the Singapore-Cambridge GCE, a Chinese senior-secondary diploma with Gaokao results, or an equivalent twelve-year-system credential, plus a final grade of at least 70% in Grade 11 or 12 English where prior instruction was in English. All applicants must meet UBC's English Language Admission Standard: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall 90, PTE Academic overall 65, or Duolingo English Test overall 125.
Application Details
Start Date:September 2027 - entry is to UBC's Winter Session, which runs September 2027 to April 2028 (Term 1 September to December, Term 2 January to April). UBC also runs a Summer Session from May to August, but not every degree admits to it.
Application Deadline:Apply by 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, for September 2027 entry (Winter Session 2027/28) - this is UBC's university-wide undergraduate deadline and it is the same date for Canadian and international applicants, not a date set by this program. The online application opens in early October 2026 through EducationPlannerBC. Earlier dates apply only to major entrance awards: 15 November 2026 for international applicants (UBC International Scholars Program) and 1 December 2026 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents (Presidential Scholars, UBC Centennial Scholars Entrance and Beyond Tomorrow Scholars). UBC advises applying by the deadline because some programs stop accepting applications on that date; later applications may be considered but are not given the same priority. Document deadlines (transcripts, English-language evidence) are issued to each applicant in the Applicant Service Centre after applying.
