BA/BS in Economics

The Economics Major Concentration is a 36-credit component of the Bachelor of Arts (or Bachelor of Arts and Science) offered by the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts. It is structured as a planned sequence of economics courses that lets students specialize within the discipline while still completing the broader B.A. degree requirements set by the Faculty of Arts. Students entering the concentration in first year normally proceed directly into the intermediate microeconomic theory sequence, and most 300- and 400-level economics courses require this theory sequence, or an equivalent, as a prerequisite; 400-level courses additionally require introductory calculus or an equivalent course in mathematical techniques for economic analysis. Students in the concentration must also complete six credits of approved statistics coursework as specified by the department. Students beginning or continuing in the concentration are expected to consult a majors adviser in the Department of Economics in each of their university years, and new students are encouraged to attend the department's orientation meeting before doing so. The concentration suits Arts students who want a structured but not fully specialized program in economic theory and analysis, and who may later consider transferring into the Honours program if they wish to pursue deeper specialization.
