Overview
The PhD in Audiology and Speech Sciences is offered by UBC's School of Audiology and Speech Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, the only doctoral program in British Columbia devoted to human communication and its disorders. Candidates complete courses in research methodology and in a major and a minor area of specialisation, totalling at least 18 credits beyond the master's degree, followed by a comprehensive examination and a research dissertation. Areas of specialisation include hearing science, speech perception, speech understanding in older adults, electrophysiologic and otoacoustic emissions diagnosis, dysphagia, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, bilingualism, developmental language disorders, developmental phonetics and phonology, phonological and phonetic disorders, discourse analysis, and acquired language and cognitive-communication disorders. All applicants must have a firm commitment from a supervisor before applying. Delivered in person at UBC Vancouver.

Admission Requirements: Applicants should hold a completed master's degree, typically in audiology and speech sciences, psychology, linguistics, or a related discipline, and must secure a firm commitment from a supervisor before applying. UBC's Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies sets a minimum overall academic average in the B+ range (76 per cent at UBC); individual programs may set a higher bar. Applicants from institutions where English was not the language of instruction, without four years of continuous English-medium post-secondary study, must submit an English test taken within the last 24 months: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.0, TOEFL 4.5 overall on the newer six-point scale (Reading 4.5, Writing 4.5, Speaking 4.0, Listening 5.0), or Duolingo English Test 125 overall (Reading 115, Writing 120, Speaking 120, Listening 115). Non-native speakers lacking that English-medium history must also submit a 5-10 minute unscripted speech sample. Three letters of reference and a statement of interest indicating PhD intentions are required; the GRE is not required.
