Overview
The Master of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering is the research-based master's route for students who arrive without an undergraduate engineering degree; applicants with engineering backgrounds are awarded the Master of Applied Science instead, and both follow the same coursework-plus-thesis structure. Candidates join a department whose research addresses sustainable energy and fuels, the management of natural resources, environmental mitigation and pollution control, health applications, and industrial competitiveness, and whose established expertise covers fluid-solids contacting, pulp and paper engineering, heat exchanger fouling, and biotechnology and biomedical process work. Thesis projects are carried out under a faculty supervisor in purpose-built laboratories, and students are encouraged to identify a prospective supervisor before applying. The degree suits graduates from chemistry, biology, physics and related sciences who want research training in process and biological engineering.

Admission Requirements: Admission follows the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general standard of a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC), though individual programs may set higher standards. Three references and transcripts from all post-secondary study are required, and the GRE is not required. Applicants from institutions where English is not the primary language of instruction must submit, within the last 24 months, IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall 90 (reading and listening 22, writing and speaking 21) or the post-January-2026 scale score of 4.5, or the Duolingo English Test overall 125 with no component below 115.

Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027.
