Overview
UBC's Master of Food Science, offered by the Faculty of Land and Food Systems since 2007, is a one-year professional degree built to prepare graduates for work in the food industry or in government rather than for academic research. The first two terms are spent in coursework that lays down the theoretical foundations of food science through a problem-based approach, and there is no thesis. Instead, the third term is a 15-week industry practicum, a six-credit course in which students take on a project inside a company or government agency. Placements begin at the start of May, once all required courses and a practicum-preparation workshop have been completed. The program is delivered in person on the Vancouver campus.

Admission Requirements: Admission is handled by UBC's Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and normally requires a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) plus an undergraduate degree in food science or a related subject; the GRE is not required. Applicants are expected to have completed two courses each in organic chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology, one course each in calculus and statistics, two courses in physics, and food science core coursework, though strong candidates missing up to two of these may fill the gap after admission. The English Language Proficiency requirement applies to anyone whose prior degree was not English-medium, tested within the last 24 months: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 overall (120-point scale; Reading 22, Writing 21, Speaking 21, Listening 22), or Duolingo 125 overall. Applicants submit transcripts, three references and a statement of interest.

Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
