Overview
The Master of Applied Science in Materials Engineering is a thesis-based research degree in UBC's Department of Materials Engineering, intended mainly for students coming from engineering or applied-science backgrounds (the parallel MSc serves science graduates). Students combine graduate coursework with independent and collaborative research within one of the department's research groupings, working under a faculty thesis supervisor. Research activity extends across the full materials cycle, from extraction and processing to performance, with active groups in casting and solidification, ceramic processing, corrosion and composites, hydrometallurgy and electrorefining, physical metallurgy, pyrometallurgy, thermomechanical processing, materials characterization, energy and sustainable materials, and advanced and additive manufacturing. The program is delivered in person at the Vancouver campus and most students take between two and three years to finish. Graduates work in industries from mining to advanced electronics, health care and aerospace, and many continue into PhD study.

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Master of Applied Science in Materials Engineering requires the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general minimum academic average, the B+ range (76% at UBC); the program notes individual programs may set higher requirements. International applicants whose prior education was not delivered in English must meet UBC's graduate English requirement, tested within 24 months of submission: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with every component at least 6.0; TOEFL overall 4.5 with Reading and Writing at 4.5, Speaking at 4.0 and Listening at 5.0; or Duolingo English Test overall 125 with Reading and Listening at 115 and Writing and Speaking at 120. The application requires two letters of reference and a statement of interest; the GRE is not required, and applicants should browse faculty profiles and indicate a supervisor of interest in their application rather than securing a prior commitment. The program admits for both May and September starts: for the May 2027 intake, applications open August 1, 2026 and close October 1, 2026, with transcript and referee submissions due October 15, 2026; for the September 2027 intake, applications open October 15, 2026 and close February 1, 2027, with transcript and referee submissions due February 15, 2027.
