Overview
The Master of Arts in Mathematics Education is a thesis-based degree offered through UBC's Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy for educators who want to investigate how mathematics is taught and learned. Students normally complete 18 credits of senior coursework and then write a thesis under a faculty supervisor. Research interests in the program reach well beyond conventional classrooms: alongside teacher education and mathematics learning at elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels, faculty study mathematical thinking in settings such as community gardens, cultural spaces, artistic performance and family life, and the department has a history of participation in large-scale research initiatives. Applicants from outside Canada whose prior institution did not instruct in English must submit IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.5, or a Duolingo English Test overall of 125, taken within 24 months of applying. The program also requires a CV, a statement of intent describing the proposed research focus, and three letters of reference.
