Overview
The Master of Education in Modern Languages Education is UBC's course-based practitioner's degree for teachers of additional languages, offered at the Vancouver campus and open to full-time or part-time study. Students orient the program toward French as a second or additional language, Asia-Pacific and other modern languages, or Indigenous language education and revitalization. The degree requires 30 credits, at least 24 of them at the graduate level, and has no thesis; applicants therefore should not approach faculty about supervision. Coursework covers second language theory and practice, acquisition, reading and writing in a second language, language socialization, identity, bi- and multilingual pedagogies and multimodality, language policy and planning, assessment, intercultural education, technology integration, discourse analysis, critical applied linguistics and research methods. The program attracts an international cohort and typically takes a little over two years. It is intended for graduates in an additional language, second language education, linguistics or a related area, preferably with two years of teaching experience, and can support salary advancement and leadership roles within school systems.

Admission Requirements: UBC's admission page for this MEd requires a Bachelor's degree in a relevant educational discipline or appropriate area with high standing, with one year of teacher education required for K-12 teachers and two years of formal teaching experience preferred, alongside a minimum overall average of 76% (B+ range). Applicants from outside Canada whose prior institution did not teach in English, tested within 24 months of applying, must submit IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with no section below 6.5, TOEFL iBT overall 94 with no section below 22, or a Duolingo score of 130 with no section below 120. Applicants also submit a CV, a statement of intent of up to 500 words connecting their interests to faculty work, three letters of recommendation with at least one academic reference, transcripts from every post-secondary institution, and, where applicable, a copy of their Permanent Resident card; the program is 30 credits of coursework with no thesis and offers full-time or part-time study.

Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
