Overview
The Master of Science in Nursing at UBC Vancouver is a 30-credit graduate degree for registered nurses who hold a bachelor's degree, normally in nursing, and want to move into leadership in education, advanced practice, policy, health-care management or the development of nursing knowledge. The program is accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing and is among the largest graduate nursing programs in Canada, with more than 150 MSN students enrolled. Students complete core, focus and elective courses and then choose between a 3-credit research project and a 9-credit thesis; decisions about thesis supervision are made after coursework rather than at the application stage. Across the curriculum the emphasis falls on improving how care is delivered, applying and extending nursing knowledge, and shaping health policy. Most students finish in a little over two years. Graduates hold leadership posts in health authorities in Canada and abroad and teach in colleges and universities, and the degree can lead directly into doctoral study.

Applicants from outside Canada whose prior institution did not instruct in English, tested within 24 months of applying, must submit IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with Reading and Writing no lower than 6.5 and Speaking and Listening no lower than 7.0, TOEFL iBT overall 100 with Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21 and Speaking 21, or a Duolingo score of 130 with no section below 125. Applicants submit transcripts, a statement of interest, and three academic or professional references; the GRE is required for some applicants depending on the specific program stream, and thesis-supervision decisions are made after coursework is underway rather than at application.
