Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Applied Geological Engineering is an online, coursework-only credential from UBC Vancouver's Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (Faculty of Science), aimed at working professionals in geological, civil, or mining engineering who cannot relocate to campus. Delivered fully asynchronously over about eight months of part-time study, the nine-credit program uses case-based project work that pairs field data collection with numerical modelling techniques. Graduates can apply the full nine credits toward a subsequent UBC master's degree, effectively laddering the certificate into further graduate study. Admission expects a four-year bachelor's degree in a related discipline, with professional field experience viewed favourably.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:76.00 / %
Admission Requirements: This UBC Vancouver graduate certificate offers three admission routes. Option 1 (standard): a recognized four-year bachelor's degree in geological, civil, or mining engineering, geology, or a related field, with a minimum B+ average in third- and fourth-year coursework, or at least 12 credits of relevant upper-year coursework in the A grade range. Option 2: applicants without that degree may be considered case-by-case on significant formal training and relevant professional experience in the discipline. Option 3: employees sponsored by an industry partner must still meet Option 1 or Option 2 standards. A professional background in geological, civil, or mining engineering, or geology is considered an asset but is not mandatory. The program page does not publish its own English-language score; applicants from institutions where English was not the language of instruction must meet UBC's graduate-wide English Language Proficiency Requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 21 (pre-21 January 2026 scale) or 4.5 overall with no section below 4 (from 21 January 2026), or Duolingo English Test 125 overall with no section below 115.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
