Overview
This program is a Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Secondary Education with a major and/or minor in German, preparing students to teach German language to grades 7-12 within the Faculty of Education's Secondary Education route. Emphasis is placed on both basic speaking and writing skills and on an understanding and appreciation of the history and culture associated with the language. Students choose two areas of specialization, a major and a minor, and complete two school-based professional terms: a five-week Introductory Professional Term and a nine-week Advanced Professional Term, typically teaching in their major subject in both. The degree is normally completed as a four-year program, though it can also be taken as an after-degree by students who already hold a prior undergraduate degree. Graduates are recommended for teacher certification in Alberta on completion. As of Fall 2026, the university is no longer accepting direct-entry applications from Alberta high school students for this major or minor; post-secondary transfer and after-degree applications continue to be reviewed.
