Program details
Overview
This program is a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology, offered through the Faculty of Arts and combining the rigour of a scientific discipline with attention to social relevance. Students study social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behaviour, and examine the structure of groups, organizations, and societies and how people interact within them. Core coursework includes Introductory Sociology, Classical Social Theory, Social Research Methods, Introduction to Social Statistics, and Themes in Contemporary Social Theory, with additional senior-level Sociology courses required to complete the major. It is positioned as building an improved understanding of social issues that can inform social policy work. The program suits students interested in research-based analysis of social structures and behaviour who want a foundation applicable to fields such as public policy and community services, among others, though career paths from a Sociology degree are not linear and depend on the activities and experience students pursue during their studies rather than a single defined career route.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct entry to the Faculty of Arts for applicants from Canadian high schools. Required Alberta high school courses: English Language Arts 30-1; one subject from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English or Math/Sciences; and three additional subjects from the same categories (e.g. Social Studies 30-1, Chemistry 30, Biology 30, Mathematics 30-1, Physics 30, or a language). No minimum or competitive average is listed on the program page. Transfer students should consult the Calendar for different requirements. Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
