Program details

Overview

This Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design covers traditional and contemporary art histories and practices, design principles, digital media, and the history of visual cultures, spanning studio disciplines such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, media arts, industrial design, and visual communication design alongside art history coursework. The major requires a minimum of 30 to 48 senior-level units in art, design, and art history, with at least 6 units at the 400 level; the foundational courses ART 134 and DES 135 are prerequisites for advanced studio work, and the program combines hands-on studio practice with theoretical study of visual culture and design history. It is based in the Department of Art & Design at the University of Alberta's Edmonton campus. The program suits students who want a broad foundation in both art and design without committing to a specialized BFA or BDes, with career paths noted including professional artist, graphic designer, UX/UI designer, illustrator, industrial designer, educator, curator, and museum professional.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Direct entry to the Faculty of Arts. Required Alberta high school courses: English Language Arts 30-1; one course from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English or Math/Sciences; and three additional courses from the same categories. No portfolio is required for admission to this BA major, and no minimum or competitive average is stated on the program page. The program offers seven areas of study including industrial design, fine arts and art history. English language proficiency is required for all applicants. Transfer students should consult the Calendar. Application deadline for fall admission is March 1 for both domestic and international applicants.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
