Overview
The Bachelor of Arts with Honors in History at the University of Alberta studies written records and relics to understand the people, relationships, and cultures of the past. Students examine how individuals and groups interact with each other, with power structures, and with their natural environments, and how culture and ideas transform over time, drawing on courses covering a wide range of periods and topics. Through the program, students develop research, writing, and critical thinking skills. Admission to the Honors major follows the standard Faculty of Arts pathway: applicants first complete the BA Honors Foundation Year, then apply to declare History as their major, which requires a minimum Admission Grade Point Average of 3.0 with an average of 3.3 or better in Honors subject courses. The major can also be completed as part of the standard (non-Honors) Bachelor of Arts, within a Faculty of Arts offering more than 900 courses across the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Graduates pursue careers in archives, education, law, journalism, and public policy, or continue to graduate study in history.

Admission Requirements: High school applicants are admitted to the BA Honors Foundation Year with a minimum application average of 85% on the five required admission subjects. By the end of the Foundation Year (minimum 24 units of course weight), students submit an online Program Selection Form to declare the History major, which requires a minimum Admission Grade Point Average of 3.0, with an average of 3.3 or better in Honors subject courses; competitive averages vary by field of study from 3.0 to 3.3. Applicants must also meet the university's English language proficiency requirement.
