Overview
This Honours program in Statistics allows students to choose from an extensive selection of courses ranging from experimental topics such as sampling techniques and statistical inference to theoretical topics such as probability theory and stochastic processes. Graduates of this program can apply to become an Associate Statistician. As with all Bachelor of Science with Honors programs at the University of Alberta, the degree centres on in-depth training in a single subject and includes an embedded research thesis project completed under the direction of a department member; students in the Honours stream are held to higher academic standards than those in the BSc Major stream. Statistics is also offered as a BSc Major. Students may add a minor from the Faculty of Arts, Native Studies, Business or Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, though a double major is not available in the Honours program. Graduates typically pursue roles such as actuary, statistician, financial risk analyst, market research analyst or operations researcher.

Admission Requirements: Direct-entry applicants from Alberta high school (or equivalent) require no specific subject prerequisite (Mathematics 31 recommended) among their five Grade 12 admission courses; provincial course equivalents apply outside Alberta and the programs-and-requirements search tool on the admissions website lists them by province. The minimum average to apply to a BSc Honors program in the Faculty of Science is 80%, calculated from the five required Grade 12 courses for high-school applicants (or from the most recent 24 transferable post-secondary units for transfer applicants); meeting this minimum does not guarantee admission, as all applicants must also meet the competitive average for the program, which varies by year and applicant pool. All applicants must meet the university's English Language Proficiency requirements.
