Overview
The Master of Education (Educational Policy Studies) is offered on campus by the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta and is available in both course-based and thesis-based formats. The program covers specialized areas within policy studies, including Adult, Community and Higher Education; Studies in Educational Leadership; Indigenous Peoples Education; and Social Justice and International Studies in Education. Graduate study is supported by faculty whose research spans Indigenous and Aboriginal perspectives in education, administration and leadership, educational policy and reform, equity and inclusivity, adult teaching and learning, international and global education, and postsecondary education. The program develops critical and creative scholarship grounded in the systemic and contextual factors that shape Canadian and international education. Applications are submitted online through the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, and prospective students are encouraged to confirm that their intended area of study aligns with current faculty research interests before applying. Further policy and program details are set out in the Faculty of Education's Graduate Student Handbook.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The program page publishes no admission requirements of its own beyond directing applicants to the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies' general admission process. Under that process, applicants require a four-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a recognized institution, with a minimum Admission Grade Point Average of 3.0 on the University of Alberta's 4-point scale (a B average), calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time study; admission is competitive and individual programs, including this Master of Education specialization, may set higher standards than this university-wide minimum. International applicants must also meet the Faculty's English language proficiency requirement, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 21.
