Overview
This program offers two routes to a Master of Science in Linguistics at the University of Alberta: a thesis-based route and a course-based route, both delivered on campus by the Department of Linguistics. The thesis-based route requires a minimum of 21 units of coursework, including two required courses and five 3-unit graduate electives chosen with the student's supervisor, plus a thesis registered through a 900-level THES course. The course-based route requires a minimum of 27 units of coursework, including the same two required courses, six 3-unit electives, and a 3-unit research project course (Master's Research Project) in place of a thesis. Both routes carry a minimum residence requirement of two four-month terms of full-time attendance. Applicants who lack sufficient preparation in linguistics may be required to complete a qualifying year before beginning the program. Completion time varies with a student's background and research, with a minimum of three terms normally expected.
