Germanic Languages and Literatures (MA)

The Master of Arts (MA) in Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto is offered by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, the oldest and largest department of German studies in Canada, with 11 full-time faculty. The program emphasizes literary and intellectual history, with research areas spanning German cinema, critical theory, language pedagogy, Yiddish studies, medieval studies, travel literature, and post-colonial, psychoanalytic, and transnational studies, and is offered in the fields of German Literature, Culture and Theory and Yiddish Studies. Full-time students complete the degree over two sessions (Fall and Winter), with a part-time option available over five sessions. Admission requires at least 6.0 full-course equivalents in German language, literature, and culture with an average grade of at least B+, along with two reference letters, transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended, a sample of written work such as a term paper, and a letter of intent of up to 500 words. The program leads to a Master of Arts degree.
