The Master of Arts (MA) in Linguistics at the University of Toronto is a full-time, in-person graduate program offered by the Department of Linguistics, which was established in 1967. Students specialize in one of Language Variation, Psycholinguistics, or Theoretical Linguistics while completing coursework and a research component under faculty supervision. The standard route is a one-year program of three full-time sessions (fall, winter, summer); a two-year, six-session route exists for the rare exceptional applicant whose background in linguistics is limited. As a completion requirement, students must demonstrate an ability to read professionally in a language other than English, though in some circumstances demonstrated competence in computer programming may satisfy this requirement instead. The degree is delivered at the St. George campus and is intended both as a terminal qualification and as preparation for doctoral study in linguistics.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need a bachelor's degree with a minimum B+ average to be admitted to the standard one-year program, along with a strong existing background in linguistics that includes coursework in introductory phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax. Applicants whose linguistics background is limited are only rarely admitted, and then to the longer two-year route. Direct entry from a bachelor's degree to the PhD is also available to exceptional applicants with an A+ average. No standardized English-language test is required or recommended for this program.
