BA/BS in Visual Studies

The Visual Studies program at the University of Calgary is a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree exploring visual media, materials, and art history. Coursework includes surveys of Western art history, art from the Second World War onward, foundational studio work in two- and three-dimensional media, and media arts theory and practice, building both technical skill and critical understanding of how art and visual practice engage culture and community. A co-operative work-placement option lets students alternate paid work terms with academic study, and study-abroad opportunities are available. Delivered through the Faculty of Arts, the program suits students drawn to making or examining art and to working with materials, developing visual thinking, critical research, and communication skills. Graduates pursue roles in galleries, museums, non-profit organizations, and commercial photography or design, or continue into graduate study in visual art or professional programs such as architecture, design, art therapy, or education.
