The Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice offers baccalaureate-holding engineers advanced, industry-relevant knowledge through two certificate levels delivered in-person at the University of Calgary. Students choose one of seven specializations: Machine Learning Engineering, Software Engineering, Process Engineering Sustainability, Process Simulation Analytics, Mechatronics Engineering, Reliability Engineering and Predictive Maintenance, or Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS). Each certificate comprises 12 units of graduate-level coursework tailored to the chosen specialization, combining technical instruction with applied engineering problem-solving. The program is designed for working professionals seeking to deepen expertise in a specific engineering discipline without committing to a full graduate degree. Full-time completion takes about one year, with a maximum completion window of two years; the CCUS specialization is structured for part-time study over roughly 16 months. Admission is open each September and January intake. Graduates gain specialized technical competencies directly applicable to current industry practice in their chosen engineering domain.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Applicants need a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale over the past two years of full-time study, plus at least one year of work experience in engineering or a closely related field (or an equivalent internship under a professional engineer). The required undergraduate degree depends on specialization: Chemical Engineering for Process Engineering Sustainability and Process Simulation Analytics; Software Engineering for the Machine Learning and Software Engineering specializations; Mechanical or Electrical Engineering for Reliability Engineering, Predictive Maintenance, and Mechatronics Engineering; and Engineering or Geoscience for the CCUS specialization. Applicants whose primary language is not English must meet the university's English language proficiency requirements as detailed in the Academic Calendar.
