The Master of Journalism at the University of King's College is offered in partnership with Dalhousie University and runs across five academic semesters, with students beginning in either the fall or a January term reserved for candidates who already have journalism experience. September entry (20 months) needs a four-year undergraduate degree (or equivalent); January entry (16 months) needs either a four-year journalism degree conferred within the last 10 years, or a four-year undergraduate degree plus full-time journalism employment in 5 of the last 7 years (or an equivalent freelance record) — on top of King's general minimum GPA of 3.0 (B average) over the last 60 credit hours. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet King's graduate English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic overall 7.0, TOEFL iBT overall 92, CAEL overall 70 with no band below 60, or PTE Atlantic overall 65 with nothing below 54. The programme itself asks for a 750-word personal statement plus a 500-1,000 word MJ project proposal, two reference letters (academic or professional depending on how recently the degree was completed), up to five portfolio samples of published or media work, a resume, and official transcripts.
