Overview
This program leads to a Master of Journalism, delivered in person in Ottawa over one to two years. Applicants enter through one of two pathways: a Year One entry for those new to graduate-level journalism training, and a Year Two entry for applicants with prior journalistic experience or credentials. Year One provides intensive foundational training in print, broadcast, and online journalism alongside courses in journalism law, journalism theory, professional practices, and reporting methods. Year Two combines media- or subject-specific workshop courses with electives and specialized seminars that support a capstone Master's Research Project, and students complete either a thesis or a research project depending on their entry point. A Collaborative Specialization in African Studies is available. The program includes a faculty member dedicated to supporting students with employment placement. It suits both newcomers to journalism seeking structured professional training and experienced journalists looking to deepen their research and analytical skills through a condensed, one-year route.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Master of Journalism admits at two entry points. Year One, for most applicants, requires an honours bachelor's degree or equivalent with normally a B+ average in the honours subject and B- or higher overall. Year Two is open to holders of a B.Journalism (Honours) or equivalent, or a bachelor's degree holder with at least five years of professional journalism experience, or otherwise substantial professional journalism experience of a high standard. Non-native English speakers must meet a proficiency standard higher than Carleton's general graduate requirement: CAEL 70 overall, TOEFL PBT 600 or iBT 100 (minimum 25 per component), or IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 7.0 minimum per band, unless they completed a degree within the past three years at an institution in Canada, the US, the UK, or another primarily English-language country. Applications received after February 1 are only reviewed if space remains.
