At University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, Canada, Rural Nursing Certificate is offered as a certificate in Health Sciences programme. The programme runs for 1 year, delivered fully online. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 6,200 per total for local students.
This certificate gives registered nurses concentrated, specialty coursework in rural nursing, delivered part-time through distance education, workshops and clinical placements, with a curriculum grounded in practice and evidence. Subjects include health assessment and first-call response, chronic disease and palliative and wound care, along with nursing practice with older persons, perinatal care, emergency and trauma nursing foundations, mental health and addictions, and the realities of living and working in a rural community.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: A post-registration certificate for practising Registered Nurses, taken part-time by distance with workshops and clinical placements, so the entry rules are professional rather than academic. Applicants must meet UNBC's general admission requirements, submit official transcripts from their degree or diploma program, and provide evidence of active practising registration as a nurse - without conditions or limitations on the licence - in the jurisdiction where they will live for the whole of their enrolment. Current licensure must be re-documented every year while enrolled. Once accepted, students must file the specified immunisation forms before starting any course with a clinical component, and must hold unrestricted registration in the jurisdiction where clinical hours will be completed; failing to do so can bar a student from clinical practice. Registered Nurses holding a diploma rather than a degree may add 15 credit hours of prescribed courses to the certificate to complete a BScN.
Application Details
Start Date:Admission twice a year, in September and January, per UNBC's School of Nursing. The certificate is designed to be completed part-time by distance education, with workshops and clinical placements. The September semester runs September to December and the January semester January to April; 2026 September classes begin 9 September 2026 and 2027 January classes 7 January 2027.
Application Deadline:UNBC's general-entry Bachelor's programs (BA, BComm, BPl, BSc) accept domestic (Canadian/PR) applications continuously with no fixed closing date for either the September or January semester. International applicants face undated, recurring cutoffs that UNBC prints without a specific year: 11 July for September-semester entry and 8 November for January-semester entry; applying later risks missing the documentation needed to study in Canada before the semester begins. Competitive-entry programs (Engineering, Nursing, Health Sciences, Education, Social Work) and individual graduate programs set their own dates each cycle -- see the programme-specific entries below for this institution's graduate programs. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
