The Honours BSocSc Economics is a 120-unit undergraduate degree at the University of Ottawa that examines how individuals and society make choices when resources are limited. Coursework covers the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, with efficiency and fairness treated as central themes running through the curriculum. The program develops quantitative and analytical skills applicable to careers in business, government, finance and policy analysis, as well as further graduate study in economics or related fields. The degree is awarded as a Bachelor of Social Sciences, Honours, by the University of Ottawa. The program is offered in English and in French, includes a French immersion stream, and co-operative education placements are available, allowing students to combine academic study with paid work experience related to their field before graduating.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: On top of the general Social Sciences language prerequisite, English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U), Economics-based programs also require Advanced Functions 4U (MHF4U); the Mathematics and Economics joint BSocSc additionally requires Calculus and Vectors 4U (MCV4U). The published minimum admission average is 75%, calculated from the applicant's top six 4U/4M/DU grades including the required prerequisites, with mathematics graded at the highest level attempted counted toward the average. This line applies uniformly across the named Economics variants and joint-honours combinations pairing Economics with Political Science or Mathematics, since the Faculty of Social Sciences publishes one Economics discipline line rather than a separate line per option. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission in a competitive cycle.
