Program details

Overview

Economics at the University of Toronto is presented as a social science examining human behaviour and the conflict between demand for goods and services and a limited supply of resources, drawing heavily on mathematics to analyze contemporary economic problems. The Department of Economics offers Specialist programs in both the Arts and Science streams, Major and Minor programs in the Arts stream, and a Focus designation in Data Analytics available to Specialist and Major students. An Arts & Science Internship Program stream is also available. All programs have limited enrolment, with admission determined by minimum grades in required courses, and full-year intermediate course prerequisites are mandatory; half-course equivalents are not accepted. Students may complete only one Economics program per subject area code, so simultaneous enrolment in multiple Economics credentials within the same area is not possible. The department notes that an undergraduate degree is generally not sufficient on its own to work as a professional economist, and that the Specialist and combined Economics & Mathematics programs place additional emphasis on mathematics to prepare students who intend to pursue graduate study.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Faculty of Arts & Science follows the University's general OUAC process (six 4U/M courses including ENG4U for Ontario applicants, or the equivalent senior credential internationally). Entry into Economics is decided after first year through POSt enrolment: the Major requires ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 at 63% each (or ECO105Y1 at 80%), plus a calculus course -- MAT133Y1 at 63%, MAT130H1/MAT135H1 and MAT136H1 at 60%, or the more advanced MAT137Y1/MAT157Y1 or two-course MAT148H1/149H1 or MAT158H1/159H1 sequence at 55%; the Minor uses the same course list. The Specialist is open only to students already in the Major, and additionally requires ECO206Y1, ECO208Y1 and ECO220Y1/ECO227Y1 (or the STA257H1+STA261H1 pair), each at 70%. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University's proficiency requirement (IELTS Academic 6.5, no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 89 overall with 22 in Speaking/Writing before 21 January 2026).
