This program leads to a Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics, with a specialization in Bioinformatics, offered jointly by the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. It addresses fundamental questions about the structure, function and evolution of biological entities through the design and application of computational approaches. Students complete nine optional graduate-level mathematics course units, a bioinformatics course (BNF5106), a master's seminar (BNF6100), and a master's thesis on a bioinformatics topic. The MSc seminar and bioinformatics course provide the specialization's disciplinary foundation, while the optional mathematics units allow students to tailor coursework to their research interests. The full-time thesis-based program runs over six terms across 24 consecutive months; part-time registration is also available. Applicants must be sponsored into the collaborative specialization by a faculty member and must identify a professor willing to supervise their research and thesis before admission.
