The Master of Science in Mathematics is a research-oriented graduate program offered by the Department of Mathematics, leading toward further study at the doctoral level. Faculty conduct research across pure and applied mathematics, including real and complex analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, functional analysis, operator theory, ergodic theory, group theory, algebraic and analytic number theory, Lie groups and Lie algebras, algebraic geometry, differential and symplectic geometry, algebraic topology, set theory, mathematical physics, fluid mechanics, probability, combinatorics, optimization, dynamical systems, computer algebra, cryptography, and mathematical finance. The program runs full-time over three sessions (12 months) for students with a complete undergraduate background in mathematics, or over 16 or 24 months full-time for students without one; a 24-month part-time option is also available for students with a complete background. Students complete either 3.0 full-course equivalents and a supervised research project, or 2.0 full-course equivalents and a thesis. Instruction is delivered in person. Provisional admission to the PhD program may be granted at the time of MSc admission.
