Classics is a minor in UPEI's Faculty of Arts covering the languages, literature, history, philosophy and civilization of ancient Greece and Rome. The 21-semester-hour minor requires six hours of Greek or Latin language study, six hours in non-language civilization courses, and nine hours of electives at the 2000 level or above, with a minimum of three of those elective hours at the 3000 level. Civilization courses are aimed at students who want a general understanding of classical antiquity without a language-study component, while language courses build reading ability in Greek or Latin texts. The program situates the foundational role Greek and Roman culture played in shaping Western civilization, giving students grounding in ancient history, literature and thought that complements majors in history, English, philosophy, political studies and related disciplines.
