Overview
The Kanawayihetaytan Askiy Certificate, offered through the College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan, is a 21-credit-unit program that provides a pathway into lands-management study for students who want to further their studies without leaving their home communities. It covers the environmental, legal, and economic aspects of land and resource management on federal reserve lands, including Aboriginal Rights, strategic and land-use planning, traditional knowledge, resource management, intellectual property law, and project management. The certificate uses a blended delivery model: students travel to the Saskatoon or Prince Albert campus three times a year for about two weeks of in-person lectures, labs, and field trips, then complete take-home final exams from their home community between sessions. It is designed for land managers, land and economic development staff, community leadership, government staff, and others working with Indigenous communities. Graduates can ladder directly into the Diploma in Indigenous Lands Governance or the Diploma in Indigenous Resource Management, and the certificate also satisfies the post-secondary level-one requirement for the National Aboriginal Lands Management Association's Professional Lands Management Certification Program.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the certificate program is based solely on the written submission contained in the application; secondary and post-secondary academic standing are not considered. Admission is open to all applicants regardless of Indigenous ancestry, age, or level of education.
