Cert in Prairie Horticulture is a certificate in Horticulture and Crop Science programme taught at University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada. The programme is delivered fully online. Tuition is CAD 627 per credit for local students.
This certificate covers how prairie horticultural crops are grown and used - field and greenhouse production of fruit, vegetables, flowers, medicinal and ornamental plants, trees, shrubs and turf. It is delivered fully online, full- or part-time, and is offered jointly through a consortium of three western Canadian institutions: Assiniboine Community College in Manitoba, Olds College in Alberta, and the University of Saskatchewan. Students can enter directly from high school, and the program is typically completed over one to five years depending on pace. Five study streams are available: fruit and vegetable production, landscaping and arboriculture, greenhouse crops, nursery crops, and landscape horticulturist apprenticeship training. The program suits students aiming to work in nurseries and greenhouses, landscape design and construction, municipal horticulture roles, or apprenticeship pathways in the trade, and it is recognized for K-12 teacher certification purposes in some contexts. It is designed to give students practical, industry-ready skills for horticulture careers or self-employment rather than a general plant-biology education.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The University of Saskatchewan's own Prairie Horticulture Certificate admissions page states only two basic conditions: applicants must be 17 years of age or older and hold a Grade 12 education or equivalent; no specific high-school courses or minimum grade average are listed. A probationary special-admission route exists for applicants who do not meet these basic conditions: they must be 21 or older by the first day of classes, be entering their first year of post-secondary study, submit transcripts and a resume, and are then restricted to one course per term until they complete two courses with a minimum grade of 60.0% in each. The programme page does not itself restate an English-language requirement, but as with all USask admissions, applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's institution-wide English Proficiency Requirement (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5, minimum 6.0 per band, or TOEFL iBT 86, minimum 19 per section), set out on the university's own admission requirements page. The program runs three terms a year, each with its own application deadline.
Application Details
Start Date:September, January and March
Application Deadline:The University of Saskatchewan does not publish fixed general application deadlines for its direct-entry undergraduate colleges (Agriculture and Bioresources, Arts and Science, Education, Edwards School of Business, Engineering, Kinesiology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Therapy): admission requirements and deadlines for the 2027-28 cycle become available only once applications open on 25 September 2026, and the site gives no separate international closing date. Non-direct professional programs set their own dates instead: for September 2027 entry, the College of Law's JD opens 15 October 2026 with rolling review to a 1 February 2027 documents deadline and is not currently accepting international applicants; the College of Medicine's MD applications close 1 October 2026 for domestic (Canadian citizen/PR) applicants only; and the Nutrition program's single deadline is 15 March 2027 for both domestic and international applicants, with no late applications considered. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
