African Studies is an Honours Bachelor of Arts Major program offered at the University of Toronto, studying the complexity and dynamism of African societies and the social, economic, cultural, environmental, and political transformations across the continent and its diasporas through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. Coursework spans topics such as political economy, nationalism, development, conflict and peacemaking, African cultures and systems of thought, environmental justice and climate change, food security, gender and African feminisms, migration and displacement, human rights, urbanization, colonialism and the post-colonial state, and Pan-Africanism, treating Africa as a subject of ongoing scholarship rather than solely a historical topic. The Major requires 6.0 credits, including 2.0 credits at the 300-level or above. This is an open-enrolment program available to students who have completed 4.0 credits, with an optional Arts & Science Internship Program (ASIP) stream combining paid work experience with academic study, typically entered in the fall of second year. Admission to the University requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six Grade 12 U/M-level courses, including English.
